Why is this recommended?
Memory effect refers to a battery’s inability to remember how much reserve capacity it has left prior to recharging. If an otoscope powered by a NiCad battery has used up only 60% of its capacity when it gets recharged, the battery “forgets” about the 40% reserve capacity; while the battery will successfully recharge, it will now assume a 60% capacity rather than the original 100%. This occurs primarily with NiCad batteries.
To avoid this, Welch Allyn recommends the above special instructions prior to using your 71000-A handle for the first time. It is important to note that this memory effect does not mean the battery can become permanently damaged; it is more an issue with incorrect charging that can most likely be corrected by fully charging and then discharging the NiCad battery.
